Our team at Clearview Vinyl Windows replaced the windows on a home in Verona recently, which featured a Prairie style pattern on the newly installed windows.

The Prairie grid style is widely credited to the architect Frank Lloyd Wright and features bold, clean lines that are usually trimmed in the colors brown, red or rust. Our customer chose to customize the style to accommodate the look and feel of the rest of the home’s exterior, utilizing white lines to compliment the existing trim on the rest of the home. This was a superb choice, raising the aesthetic value of the home.

On the front of the house we installed a large fixed picture window surrounded on each side by our popular double hung windows, all featuring the Prairie grid style. Each double hung window we installed on this home features two moving sashes or panels that tilt inwards to make cleaning and maintaining easy. In addition to the front, we also installed new double hung windows on the side and back of the home. The crew from Clearview Vinyl Windows was in the village of Waterville, NY at a favorite family run eatery, Johnny’s China Café. The crew wasn’t there for specifically for lunch for this visit though, this time we were there to help upgrade the front windows. We were tasked with removing the existing two static picture windows and their original frames from the front of the building and install two custom three section slider units.

We removed all of the old window material including the trim before taking out the old windows, and replaced them with the custom designed new triple unit. Each of the triple units feature double hung window which are able to open in either direction to allow fresh air into the restaurant. The double hung windows are also easy to clean since each panel or sash can tilt to make cleaning less of a chore. These energy efficient windows protect the interior of the restaurant from 70% of the sun’s harmful UV rays and also feature a deluxe night latch for safety and security. Once the window is inserted in position, insulated, and caulked we replaced the existing trim, returning the overall look and feel of the buildings facade back to the original look. As you can see from the after photo the install looks great and now customers can enjoy some fresh country air while they eat.

Clearview Vinyl Windows was hard at work in the village of Waterville, NY earlier this year to work on a home that was having a number of renovations done. Our client chose Clearview Vinyl Windows as the contractor to remove all the existing windows and frames and replace them with all new double hung windows and frames. Each unit we installed features two sashes or panels that can move independently of one another and has the capability of angling inward to make cleaning a snap. Recently Clearview Vinyl Windows went to work in the town of Hamilton, NY, home of one of the nation’s top 10 liberal arts colleges and named after a founding father of the United States, Alexander Hamilton.

Trapezoid and Double Hung windows

For this project our customer’s goal was to improve the space inside to allow furniture to fit along the wall without blocking windows. As you can see from the before photo, the original windows extended to the corner of the home and the lower awning windows were located low on the wall. We removed all the existing windows installations and closed the awning on the bottom and right to narrow and shorten the space for the new windows. We matched the original style and color of the exterior wall panels and installed new custom framing around both the upper trapezoid windows and two new side-by-side double hung windows below.

Although the custom-made upper windows do not open the lower double hung windows do open and allow both sashes or panels to move up and down and tilt inwards for easy cleaning.

Our client was very happy with the results and can now enjoy the outdoor summer breezes in the comfort of their home.

Clearview Vinyl was on the job in the village of Oriskany Falls, NY, first settled around 1794 and originally known as Cassety Hollow. The village name is derived from a nearby waterfall along the Oriskany Creek.

In this historic colonial home we removed 12 of the original glass and replaced them with custom double hung vinyl windows, each featuring a colonial grid pattern in the pane itself to add some extra character to the window. We removed the old non-functioning windows along the side of this home and replaced them with brand new vinyl frames. Our customer chose to update the look of their home with a new white vinyl frame color, adding contrast and drawing attention to the beauty of the spacious new windows. The middle window pictured on this wall is a single hung window, meaning that only the bottom sash moves up and down and tilts inwards for cleaning, leaving the top panel fixed in place.

At the corners of the home, we also replaced each set of three windows with a new, non-operating picture window in the middle, surrounded on each side by a single double hung window. Double hung windows are similar to single hung, except both sashes or panels can move up and down and each sash can also tilt inwards for easy cleaning.

Bow Windows Invite More Natural Light

A Bow window is made up of three or more windows joined together at equal angles to form a curve that protrudes from the exterior wall. Theses individual windows can be configured in a variety of ways including single hung, double hung, and casements. The added space created by the sweeping curve of a Bow window opens up a room but also gives the impression that a space is larger then it really is, by providing a larger viewing area to the outdoors and allowing more natural light into the living space.

No matter where you live in Central New York at some point the dog days of summer catches up with us all and we’ll be looking for a place to get away from the heat. Here are a few window tips to help keep you and your home cool during the summer months:

• Preventing the heat from getting to your windows is a valuable first step. This may mean planting shade trees or other natural vegetation to block the warm rays of the sun from even getting to your windows.
• Install mini blinds to block the sun. There are a variety of choices for blinds to match your interior décor and at a variety of costs. The key is to keep the blinds closed during the day to prevent that heat from getting inside.
• Use heavy or layered curtains to keep the intense sunlight from warming the interior your home during the hours of the day when the sun is beating down.
• A drafty window may no longer fit together properly, check the weather stripping around the window and make sure it fits correctly to shut off the flow of air. Make sure the caulking is still in place to keep the windows sealed. If drafty windows are causing your home to lose heat in the winter those same drafty windows may also leech out any air conditioning you use in the summer.

Like all windows, your vinyl windows will need to be cleaned a couple times a year. Maintaining proper care for your vinyl windows you will extend the life and most vinyl windows simply slide out of the frame making them easy to clean. It is important to use the right cleaners and what you may not know is that simple household cleaners will do the trick.

Dish Soap

You can clean your vinyl windows by simply mixing a small amount of dish soap with water. Use a soft cloth when cleaning the windows. While cleaning, apply the soap and water in a circular motion until all dirt and debris has been removed. Any abrasive materials could have a negative effect on the surface of glass and window frames.

Murphy’s Oil Soap

Mix 1 teaspoon of this Murphy’s oil soap with a gallon of water. As with dish soap, be sure to use a soft cloth and apply this mixture to the windows in smooth, circular patterns. Although these are intended to be helpful tips you should always follow the manufacturer’s directions on cleansers.

Bleach

You can use bleach to clean tough stains. Bleach should be used on your vinyl windows at a 4:1 ratio of water to bleach. Apply it as you would the detergent solution. Rinse the window with clear water.

Windex or Lysol

Water-based cleaners such as Windex or Lysol can be used to clean the interior of your vinyl windows. You should only spray a small amount onto the window and then remove the cleaner using a soft cloth.

Vinegar

If notice mold or mildew simply use vinegar to treat your windows. Apply a mixture of 30 percent vinegar to 70 percent water. This mixture will remove existing mold or mildew, and should help prevent from returning.

What NOT To Use

Aggressive organic solvents should not be used on your vinyl windows. These type of cleansers could affect the surface appearance of the vinyl. Examples of such cleansers are chlorine bleach, liquid grease remover, nail polish remover and furniture polish/cleansers.

Do not use mildly abrasive cleaners such as Ajax. Abrasive materials could have a negative effect on the surface of glass and window frames.

Proper maintenance of your vinyl windows is important to the longevity and function. The options listed above should cover just about any situation your windows would become exposed to. These options may not work for everything, like oil, paint and tar. For hard stains on your vinyl windows you should use Soft Scrub, Lestoil or Lysol. When using these products you should always follow the manufacturer’s directions on cleansers.
